Tips for maintaining silver jewelry
Silver is a precious metal and has been used for making money and jewelry since ancient times. Silver is a natural material whose shine and color depend on the influence of environmental conditions, but the good thing is that it can always be restored to its original appearance and shine. Whether and how much your jewelry will “oxidize”, i.e. darken or lose its shine, depends on many factors – the pH of your skin, temperature and sweating, chemicals you put on your skin, humidity in the air, where you keep the jewelry… However, this does not mean that the jewelry is not made of high-quality silver, but rather a surface chemical reaction has occurred between the silver and oxygen and sulfur from the environment. Some people have a more violent reaction and silver "oxidizes" faster, while others retain its shine for years.
Here are some tips on how to maintain your silver jewelry and restore its shine:
- Store jewelry individually to avoid mechanical damage, preferably protected from contact with air, moisture, and the sun.
- Avoid contact with jewelry with chemicals – perfumes, skin creams and lotions, sunscreens, and mosquito repellents, especially chlorinated water in swimming pools, and hair care and coloring products.
- Avoid contact that can scratch the smooth surface of silver or chip stones or mother-of-pearl.
- Be careful during sports and intense activities while wearing jewelry to avoid mechanical damage or chemical reactions due to sweating.
- Remove more delicate pieces of jewelry before going to bed.
- Do not expose jewelry made of pearls, coral, amber, chevron, malachite, and lapis lazuli to water for long periods of time, and do not expose them to any cleaning chemicals.
- Silver alone loves clean water because it removes grease and dirt from the surface and we recommend that you occasionally gently wash your jewelry with warm running water and dry it well afterwards. You can also use a soft toothbrush to gently clean hard-to-reach places.
- For enhanced care and to restore shine, you can make a bath of warm water and neutral dishwashing liquid (with the addition of a little baking soda, but not necessary). Leave the jewelry in this solution for 15 minutes, rub it a little with your fingers or a soft toothbrush, rinse with warm water and dry well with a soft cloth or paper towel. Not recommended for jewelry from paragraph 6.
And wear your silver jewelry – the silver will keep its appearance, and you will be happy and adorned!
